Juist. Ook mijn collega's weten het soms niet meer als ik ze weer eens vraag hoe je een bepaald woord moet uitspreken. En dan heb ik het nog niet eens over de verschillen tussen de Engelse en Amerikaanse uitspraak (en schrijfwijze). Doen we de volgende keer!

Heb soortgelijke teksten (of misschien zelfs wel dezelfde) wel eens eerder gezien, kan je inderdaad knap over struikelen! Engels op zich is niet zo'n moeilijke taal (vind ik tenminste), maar de uitspraak van sommige dingen kan in sommige gevallen toch wel behoorlijk lastig zijn. En wat betreft Brits Engels en Amerikaans Engels is er ook nog eens veel verschil in de betekenis van woorden! Een 'fag' bijvoorbeeld is in Amerika iets heel anders dan in Engeland!
Vond nog een mooi gedicht over de Engelse taal op een internetforum waar ik wel eens kom:
Our English Language
When I hear people say that English is tough,
I guess that they’ve just not learnt enough!
It’s easy to see that the ause that’s in pause,
Changes in because but doesn’t in cause,
And the ear that’s in year sounds the same as in fear,
But when you see swear you pronounce it like air!
And it surely is simple that the ‘ow’ that’s in bough,
Is spelt with a U but not in allow,
But the G H in cough and the same one in trough,
Are pronounced like the Fs we see in the word scoff,
And when we see O we think we say close,

But we’ve also got auntie which doesn’t agree!
I seem to say home just the same way as comb,
But comb’s with a B and we’ve an A that’s in foam,
But comb’s not like bomb, and bomb’s not like tomb,
And the ‘oo’ that’s in womb is the same as consume,
Surely you see that the E that’s in bead,
Is the same as in deed, sweet swede and concede,
But the E that’s in bread is like that one of dead,
And be careful when reading the red book you have read,
Then we have words like great, grated and greet,
Don’t get them confused with mate, meet and meat,
We’ve got the same sound in word as in herd,
But don’t mix them up with the ‘er’ that’s in bird,
And you may think that word is the same as in sword,
But sword is the one like the O A in board,
But the O A in board’s not the same as in toad,
As the one in toad is the same as in code,
And the Os that we see sound simple in goose,
Are not the same as in blood but the same as in juice,
And again are in hood but don’t sound as good,
As the O’s seen in proof, and perhaps they should.
But our English language is as easy as pie,
Once you know that the Y sounds the same as the I,
Except in words like weigh and conceive,
As the sounds in these words are there to deceive.
